Then the energy changed — quickly.
Linden’s Tigers came out roaring against New Brunswick, scoring 27 first-quarter points and adding 22 more before halftime. The result was a 49-14 win that sent a jubilant home crowd into the weekend and lifted Linden to a 2-0 start.
The scoreboard tells one part of the story, but the evening’s best moments were scattered across the field: the color guard’s opening formation; captains assembling at midfield; players raising their helmets during introductions; and a sideline full of black-and-orange uniforms waiting for the first snap. The photographs from the night capture the anticipation before the game as clearly as the celebration afterward.
On the field, junior quarterback Aiden Waheed threw for 227 yards as Linden completed 11 of 15 passes and finished with 301 yards of total offense. Freshman Shane Henderson led the receiving group with 88 yards, while senior Elijah Pierre paced the ground game with 46 yards. Linden’s defense also supplied plenty of highlights: senior linebacker Alan Szurgot recorded seven tackles, senior linebacker Joe Boyd had a sack, and senior defensive back Zion Francis made an interception.
The crowd’s support reached from the stands to the sideline. Mayor Derek Armstead, Superintendent Dr. Atiya Y. Perkins, Board President Malaysia Thomas, board members, district administrators, staff, families and students were all part of a night that blended competition with a strong sense of community pride.
For the Tigers, it was an emphatic home-opening victory. For Linden, it was also a Friday night reminder of what a full stadium can hold: respect, school spirit, shared memory and a lot to cheer about.
