Standing at 19,341 feet, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain. According to a City of Rahway announcement, Mongo decided to join the climbers despite having no prior training or preparation for the journey.
The expedition brought extreme temperature changes, difficult terrain and setbacks. The city reported that six members of the group required helicopter evacuation because of breathing difficulties, while a fire at one camp forced the climbers to relocate. Mongo fell six times and sustained injuries but continued the climb.
“Climbing Kilimanjaro made me realize that I am stronger than I had imagined,” Mongo said. “My climb was bigger than reaching the top. It was about proving to myself and to everyone that when you put your mind to something, you can succeed.”
Mongo climbed alongside people from Germany, France, England, Australia and Japan, sharing the experience with an international group while taking pride in representing her hometown.
Mayor Raymond A. Giacobbe congratulated her on the achievement, recognizing the determination she demonstrated throughout the expedition.
“On behalf of the City of Rahway and our City Council, I congratulate Gladys on this incredible accomplishment,” Giacobbe said. “Her courage, determination, and perseverance are truly inspiring. We are proud to have her represent Rahway on such an extraordinary journey.”
For Mongo, the experience became both a personal accomplishment and an opportunity to carry a connection to Rahway far from home.
“I am very happy I did this climb and was able to represent my town, the City of Rahway,” she said.
