Established by organizing committees from Kenilworth, Roselle Park and Union, the branch was chartered by the National Council of YMCAs in 1966. Its early programs and events took place in an enclosed pavilion at Union’s Five Points intersection, before the branch moved to its current location at 201 Tucker Avenue.

The YMCA’s roots in surrounding communities reach back even further. Historical records document programs and services in Hillside, Kenilworth, Linden, Roselle, Roselle Park and Union as early as 1959.

Founded in 1900 and formerly known as the YMCA of Eastern Union County, The Gateway Family YMCA has grown to offer youth programs, aquatics, wellness activities, housing support and chronic disease management. Today, the organization serves more than 20,000 individuals and families annually across its branches and program sites.

The organization’s mission is rooted in Christian principles and welcomes people of all ages, religions and cultures. Its programs emphasize well-being in spirit, mind and body, guided by four core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

That commitment includes financial assistance for membership, programs and services. Families can request an application at a branch Welcome Center, helping keep opportunities to learn, stay active and connect with others accessible to those facing financial barriers.

“While we are proud of our vast history and this milestone, we continue to look forward to a bright future,” said Jodi Pelano, Senior Executive of Branch Operations. “We are committed to building stronger communities and ensuring that the Y remains a vital resource.”

Community members are invited to anniversary celebrations throughout the remainder of 2026.
